ECO

Back to Nature

(We are pleased to notice that our eco effort is increasingly appreciated by our guests)
At Mon Choix, we are making a serious effort to be eco-friendly, to promote a greener Mauritius, to be part of the leaders in the implementation of the "Maurice - Ile Durable" Government policy and to contribute as much as possible to making the world a better place.
It is against this background, that we have created and will soon launched www.green-mauritius.com (a website to contribute to the national effort to promote and protect the environment on the island and which will address the aspect of Management, Health & Well-being, Energy, Transport, Water, Material & Waste, Land Use & Ecology and Pollution). Another indirect "eco" website will be www.dodoisland.com (intended to be the most complete DODO MUSEUM in the world).
And to our guests, we are pleased to make them aware of Mon Choix's effort, as follows (but, we cannot go much faster than the country itself):
Energy
Light bulbs are of energy-saving type (as much as possible), All rooms have a notice to guests to save energy by switching off lights, fans and air-conditioners. All bathrooms have been equipped with a shower in order to discourage baths. All electricity water-heaters have been replaced by small gas heaters. Solar (panels) energy is being installed to reduce gas consumption in the bathrooms, kitchen and laundry. The kitchen is almost 100% gas operated. Environment-friendly fridges are often checked to minimize electricity consumption. The staff is regularly reminded of the stipulated energy-saving policy and procedures to save electricity and gas. Candle-light is used to a maximum in all common rooms (living rooms, dining rooms, entrance and verendahs) and encouraged as being more charming. All rooms are supplied with candles.
Water
All rooms have a notice to guests to save energy by saving water and minimizing water consumption (basin, shower and WC). All bathrooms have been equipped with a shower in order to discourage baths. The staff is regularly reminded of the stipulated energy-saving policy and procedures to save water. There is no excess of over-washing. The salt-water swimming pool filter has eliminated the use of chemicals. Rain water is collected for watering indoor plants and for certain cleaning jobs. Water from the nearby river is being pumped to water the garden. All water connections (pipes) are exposed in order to immediately detect any leak, if any.
Disposal
Glass, paper/carton, metal, plastic and organic material (fruits, veggies, etc…) are separated prior to collection. Organic materials is used to make compost. Plastic bags are banned. We use our own re-usable containers for shopping. The staff is regularly reminded of the stipulated disposal policy and procedures. Plastic and paper tableware, cups, plates, etc … are not used.
Eco-active
We have closely associated the aspect of ecology and eco-friendly to the hotel, firstly by calling it an “eco-retreat” and secondly by promoting it constantly under the name of the website: www.ecomauritius.com . Everyone associated to the hotel (staff, management and guests) are made aware of its positioning as an eco-conscious establishment. The staff is educated and encouraged about ecology. We often donate furniture and other hotel material as charity to selected families in the area. We often replace equipment, appliances and consumables with more environment-friendly items and models. We have a program awaiting approval by the authorities and the local community to create and maintain hiking trails which are currently used by guests in the mountain nature reserves in the vicinity of the hotel. Guests are encouraged to take part in this hiking activity.
Protection
The promotion of the location (local area) is closely linked to that of the hotel. In fact we see it as a vital component of our “prestation” (product / offer). We sell the authenticity of the country and of the area. And we invite guests to discover and enjoy its natural beauty as well as its historical and cultural aspects. 100% of our staff is local and live in close proximity of the hotel. A maximum of the supplies are purchased in the nearest supermarket, shops, vegetable stalls and bakery. The garden is full of indigenous fauna and flora (including giant fruit bats, endangered species of birds, moles, river shrimps, etc…). A lot of the flowers used and fruits consumed come from the garden (mangoes, papaws, bananas, goyavas, herbs, tomatoes, etc…). We invite guests to purchase local produce and we closely associate the aspect of protection and ecology to the hotel by promoting it constantly under the name of the website: www.ecomauritius.com . Everyone associated to the hotel (staff, management and guests) are made aware of its nature protection policy and procedures and activities. In our program to create and maintain hiking trails which are used by guests in the mountain nature reserves in the vicinity of the hotel, we intend to label rare plants and endangered species in order to protect nature as much as possible. Guests will also be encouraged to take part in this discovering, locating and labelling activity.
